Accommodations

Come aboard Princess’s newest ship, the Discovery.  In addition to your beautiful stateroom, all meals, classes, and most project supplies are included, along with all taxes and port fees.   Live music, movies, performers, fitness facilities, and free room service are all part of the Princess Cruise experience.  Gratuities are not included, and can be charged to your room.

This cruise features the new Ocean Medallion service, replacing the usual key card with easy new technology. The Medallion is like a car key fob on steroids!  In addition to opening your cabin’s door, and charging your beverages and extras, it can act like “find your family” does on your smart phone, so you can use Medallion to locate your teachers and friends on the ship.  If you are lounging by the pool, you can order a drink and a snack, and the waiter will be able to locate you to deliver your food! There’s also a privacy setting, for when you want to be left alone to nap or knit without interruption.

Optional add-ons not included in the price of this retreat:  Travel insurance, WiFi, drink packages (specialty coffee, soft drinks, and alcoholic beverages), spa services, laundry, and shore excursions.  Read about the additional packages available.

If you are adding packages or excursions to your cruise, be sure to charge your own credit card for these extras.  Any incidentals charged to the Wild Onion Productions account will incur a $50 service fee, in addition to that incidental.

To add a package, or discuss hotel accommodations pre/post cruise, contact our travel agent, Janice, at 1(800)544-5140, or email her at Janice@captivatingescapes.com

Meals

All meals (except ship specialty restaurants, which require an additional fee) are included in the cost of the retreat.  Snacks, coffee, tea, water, lemonade, and iced tea are available all day, at no cost.  Soft drinks, specialty juices and coffee drinks, and adult beverages are extra, and are not included in the price of the retreat.  There are various drink packages available for purchase; read about them here, and contact Janice to add to your cruise.

We will have a daily 5:40pm dinner reserved in the Main Dining Room, with enough tables near each other to accommodate the group; you are welcome to eat with the group in the Main Dining Room, explore the buffet or other restaurants, or order room service.  Our first night on board will be our meet n’ greet, so we’d like to have everyone attend this first dinner together in the MDR.  After that, it’s your vacation, and you are free to dine at your pleasure!

Knitting Classes

Brioche, Baby!

Long featured on knitters’ annual resolution list, Brioche is often viewed as intimidating as it is beautiful.  Teacher Terry Neal is an experienced brioche teacher, and she’s going to ensure that the beginner Brioche knitter is successful, as well as engaging the more experienced Brioche knitter with exciting ideas.  Terry will be teaching you how to successfully choose colors for your Brioche project, and you will receive a beginner and intermediate knitting pattern to work with. Additionally, we’ll create some 3-D needle felted sea creatures, which we can bead and add to the project bag we’ll be dyeing on the first night.

Most of the project supplies are included in the cost of the retreat (except for the yarn for your Brioche project).  Details will be sent to participants in January, as will  more general information including a Cruise Handbook, and a Zoom meeting so we can all “meet” before we board!

Here’s our tentative schedule:

Embarkation day:  board the ship, get settled, watch the safety drill video, meet the group for dinner, then move to our designated lounge (tbd!) to dye our project bags (it’s not messy!)

Day 2:  (at sea) morning:  Colorwork for Brioche, including intro to knitting Brioche; break for lunch; afternoon: begin knitting included Brioche pattern (we’ll offer an additional easy pattern, for newer Brioche knitters, as well as Terry’s Ocotillo shawl pattern, for the more adventurous of us)

Day 3: Cabo San Lucas (at noon).  This is a free day, to explore Cabo, or stay on the ship and knit.  No planned classes.

Day 4: Cabo until 1:00pm  Terry will be around in the morning, to knit with and ask questions.  Lunch (on or off the boat), then afternoon needle felting (all supplies included)

Day 5:  (at sea) morning: bead the needle felting, decorate the project bags, create more needle felting, break for lunch, then afternoon is free time to check in with Terry with any Brioche questions.  Around 4pm, we’ll meet back in the classroom to sign the backs of the project bags, and to have a show and tell session.  Farewell dinner in the main dining room.

Day 6: Disembark Los Angeles

Yarn Market

Cabo has no yarn shops, but the ship will! Visit our on-site (or should we say “on-ship”) yarn market, where you’ll be able to purchase kits, skeins, and so much more!  Tempe Yarn Shop will be offering special yarn kits for purchase, either before the cruise or on board.  We totally understand the importance of yarn, so don’t worry- we’ll keep you posted with photos and information about purchasing yarn for the project, in addition to getting you information if you prefer to stash dive!

Additionally, each reservation includes a Swag Bag, filled with special goodies selected by Susan and Terry!

Activities and Ample Knitting Time

In addition to the classes, we’ve allowed for ample knitting time, and the luxury of soaking up the warm sunshine on the decks, with your new (and old) friends.  Wild Onion Production retreats always allow you to rev up your creative juices, then relax your buzzing brain with free time to enjoy your new friends.  If you want a break from knitting, there are lots of activities on the ship for you to explore.  We won’t have a set land excursion for Cabo, although you are welcome to participate in an excursion, either through the cruise line, or on your own.  You are welcome to contact Janice to discuss pre-purchasing a cruise excursion offering. If you go off the ship on your own, it will be your responsibility to return on time.  The ship closes the doors half an hour before leaving port; don’t be a pier runner!  If you return late, the ship will leave you behind, and you will be responsible for getting yourself back to Los Angeles.

Transportation Details

Janice is our wonderful travel agent  and she can be reached at 1(800)544-5140, or email her at Janice@captivatingescapes.com  She can help  book you into the hotel Terry and Susan will stay at the night before embarkation.  We highly recommend arriving in Los Angeles a day or two early, to give you wiggle room to accommodate any flight disruption.  Please note that the price of the retreat does not include any hotel, food, or transportation costs pre or post cruise.

In addition to hotel stays, Janice can help you with travel insurance (we strongly urge you to purchase travel insurance!), and any additional drink, gratuity, wifi, or fitness packages.
