In addition to your relaxing cabin, all of your on-board meals, snacks, specialty coffee drinks, cocktails and wine by the glass, frozen drinks, beers, liqueurs, and desserts are included.

You won’t be hit with any surprise fees at the end of your time with us, as we’ve also included wifi, gratuities, taxes, port fees, and a $100 onboard credit per cabin.

The ship features amenities such as a theater, clubs, games, dancing, live music, shopping, a rooftop garden, a fitness center, and a resort deck pool.  Entertainment is also included for you, so go ahead and enjoy an evening of theater, stand-up comedy, or live music!  A daily cruise newsletter will allow you to plot your free time.

All classes and patterns,  and extra instruction time is also included.

If you are adding packages or excursions to your cruise, be sure to charge your own credit card for these extras.  Any incidentals charged to the Wild Onion Productions account will incur a $50 service fee, in addition to that incidental.

This cruise offers many exciting excursions of all levels of activity.  In addition, our travel agent Janice, has several excursions not associated with the cruise line, which might interest you.  To add an excursion, or discuss plane fare and/or hotel accommodations pre/post cruise, contact our travel agent, Janice, at 1(800)544-5140, or email her at Janice@captivatingescapes.com

Meals

All meals on board ship are included in the cost of the retreat; snacks, specialty coffee and tea drinks, bottled water, frozen drinks, specialty juices, desserts, and adult beverages (wine by the glass, beers, liqueurs, cocktails) are also included in your retreat price. There are 4 complimentary dining rooms on board, plus cafes, juice bars, grills, late night snack venues – well, you get the idea. You will not be hungry!

One of the pleasures of being on vacation is room service, and breakfast room service is complimentary!

In addition to all of the complimentary meal choices, there are several specialty restaurants, which require an extra fee, and are not included in the price of the retreat. However, you will be able to use your $100 onboard credit! If you’d like to check out the dining in advance, here’s a blog post with menus and guides.

When reading the blog post, remember that you have an all-included package, so some of the mentioned extra costs won’t apply to you!

We have a daily 6pm dinner reserved in one of the Main Dining Rooms, with enough tables to accommodate the group; you are welcome to eat with the group in the Main Dining Room, or explore the other restaurants.

Our first night on board will be our meet n’ greet cocktail party with a special project, so we’d like to have everyone attend this first dinner together in the Main Dining Room. After that, it’s your vacation, and you are free to dine at your pleasure!

Classes

The classes for this cruise are sure to get your creative juices flowing… especially when Mary Annarella of Lyrical Knits, our expert instructor and designer, introduces you to interesting new slip stitches and mosaic knitting, and shows you how to combine yarn movement and colors to create your own mosaic knitting adventures.

NOT-SO-FREUDIAN SLIPS– COLORWORK WITH SLIPPED STITCHES: Up your colorwork game by giving your knitting the slip.  This class explores using slipped stitch techniques for adding colorwork to knitting without stranding.  Different textures result, and there’s no steeking if you want a flat piece.  We’ll knit a small sampler as we practice different slip stitch and mosaic patterns ranging from very simple to more intermediate and showing how you can get a completely different look by changing which side you hold your yarn to when you’re slipping a stitch.

MOSAIC KNITTING: Take your slip stitching to another level as you learn how to create pictures in knitting.  There’s no stranded colorwork involved in this technique where we’ll compare and contrast mosaic knits + purls, learn how to knit from (and create!) charts for mosaic pictures, and finish up with a “hot pad” pattern to commemorate our Alaskan Cruise.

CAST OFF SHAWL KAL:  Mary is designing a shawl pattern for us to cast on, on embarkation day.  It will be a lovely souvenir of our time together, as well as an engaging but not too complex knit to keep our hands busy on the ship!

ALASKA ADVENTURE COWL:  Part game, part knitting, all fun!  We’ve got some fun questions for you, and your answer will determine the designs of your cowl.

On the last few days of our trip, we’ll cast on a knit-your-own-adventure style cowl with an Alaskan theme!  The knitting techniques will make use of some of the slipped stitch and mosaic patterns we learned during class, all at a relaxed pace that lets you choose between both simple and more complex stitch techniques, or a mix of both.  The cowl will work with either DK or light worsted weight yarn in two colors.

This is sure to be a blast to knit, and a very individualized memento of our time together.  Yarn not included, but details will be sent in advance of the trip so you can stash dive, or you may want to purchase souvenir yarn when you visit a yarn shop at one of our port stops!

DYE YOUR OWN SILK PROJECT BAG:  We’ll be including a silk project bag with your goodies, and Susan (aka WildOnion) will be showing you a creative and surprising way to dye this, so you’ll leave with a unique and personal bag.  Bag and dye materials are included.

Doesn’t this sound amazing?  IT IS!  We’ve also built in lots of down time for you, so that you can relax, or gather with a few friends to work on your projects quietly, or go off ship on an excursion.  We never want our guests to feel overwhelmed, so we make sure that you have time to process your ideas and relax that busy brain.   Mary or Susan will often be found in the classroom for “open studio time” with no formal class going on.  Use this time to find inspiration, enjoy one on one guidance from the teacher, or work through your process.  Open studio really lends itself to asking (and answering) our favorite question:   “What if…”!

Tentative schedule:

Embarkation Day:  board the ship, get settled, watch the safety drill video, then meet the group at 4:30 (crafters only) for our Cast-Off party  KAL.  Our non-knitters will join us later for dinner, and afterwards, we may gather informally.  Or unpack!

Day 2: (at sea) morning:

Not-So-Freudian Slips—Colorwork with Slipped Stitches class; break for lunch; afternoon:  Mosaic Knitting class.  Relax after class: explore the ship, or partake in one of the many activities the ship offers.  After dinner, we’ll meet for a casual gathering (lounge tbd) for knitting and chatting!

Day 3:  Ketchikan 7:00am – 4:00pm We’re planning to walk into this charming town to visit 2 yarn shops, walk the boardwalk which is built out over the water, watch salmon jumping along an antique bridge, and do a little shopping.

Day 4 and 5 have no formal classes.

Day 4:  cruising along the Endicot Arm Fjord in the morning, docking at Juneau 1:30 – 10:00pm.  Excursions are available, not included in the price of the retreat. Meals are available on the ship; restaurants on land are not included in the price of the retreat.

Day 5:  Skagway  7:00am – 6:00pm.  Excursions are available, not included in the price of the retreat.  Meals are available on the ship; restaurants on land are not included in the price of the retreat.

Day 6: (at sea) morning: Dye Your Own Silk Project Bag; break for lunch.  Afternoon: we’ll start knitting the Alaska Adventure Cowl.  There will be time after class to knit on deck, or partake in one of the many activities offered on the ship.  After dinner, we’ll have a casual gathering, to continue working on our projects, or just chat.

Day 7: (daytime at sea) morning:  continue with the Alaska Adventure Cowl; break for lunch. and maybe sign each other’s project bags!  The afternoon is yours to schedule as you please. Victoria, British Columbia 5:30 – 11:59pm.  Excursions are available, not included in the price of the retreat.  Meals are available on the ship; restaurants on land are not included in the price of the retreat.

Day 8:  Disembark Seattle

Yarn

Activities and Ample Knitting Time

Transportation Details

Closer to the retreat date, we’ll be sending you information about what yarn and tools you might want to bring from home.  We’ll also keep you posted about the yarn requirements needed to complete the Alaska Cruise Cowl, so you can stash dive before boarding.

We’ll distribute a handout of LYS’s in our port stop towns; we plan to visit the LYS in Ketchikan as a group.

Each reservation includes a Swag Bag, filled with special goodies selected by Susan and Mary.  You will also receive  2 exclusive knitting patterns, and a silk project bag to dye.

In addition to the classes, we’ve allowed for ample creative time outside of formal class time, whether on deck, at a lounge, or in our open studio.  Enjoy the luxury of time to marvel at the Alaskan shoreline while relaxing up on the decks, with your new (and old) friends.  Wild Onion Production retreats always allow you to rev up your creative juices in class, then relax your buzzing brain with free time to enjoy your new friends.  If you want a break from knitting, there are lots of activities on the ship  for you to explore.

We’ll have our classroom for the day, so when we’re not in class, there will be opportunities for “open studio time”.  Enjoy this time to work on your project, explore the process, or connect with one of our teachers.  Open studio time allows you the freedom to find inspiration, or have a question answered about the project.

EXCURSIONS:  We will disembark together at Ketchikan, AK, and walk the short distance to historic Creek Street, lined with charming shops and a sidewalk built out over the water.  We have planned a visit to a yarn shop in town, but other than that, you will be able to indulge your own interests when we dock at a port city.  Excursions for this cruise are not included in the price of the retreat.  Janice our travel agent  has several excursions to recommend which are not associated with the cruise line, so please contact her for advice (800-544-5140, or email her at Janice@captivatingescapes.com).  If you go off the ship on your own, it will be your responsibility to return on time.  The ship closes the door half an hour before leaving port; don’t be a pier runner!  If you return late, the ship will leave you behind, and you will be responsible for getting yourself to the next port, or back to Seattle.

Here is the cruise itinerary.

The price of the retreat is all-inclusive, and includes your cruise cabin, meals on board ship, drink/gratuity/wifi packages, taxes and port fees, all classes, extra instruction time, patterns, and materials (except yarn) needed for class projects, a Swag Bag, and a visit to the Ketchikan yarn shop.  Excursions and transportation to and from Seattle are not included.  If you wish, our travel agent Janice, can help you with that portion of your trip.  She can be reached at 1(800)544-5140, or email her at Janice@captivatingescapes.com

We highly recommend arriving in Seattle a day or two early, to give you wiggle room to accommodate any flight disruption.   Please note that the price of the retreat does not include any hotel, food, or transportation costs pre or post cruise.

In addition to hotel stays, Janice can help you with travel insurance (we strongly urge you to purchase travel insurance! Please note our Travel Insurance Policy )
