Classes

Hilary Latimer, the mastermind behind Criminal Knits, has designed an exclusive cowl pattern that incorporates her 2 favorite topics- knitting and cozy mysteries!  Help us solve this cozy murder mystery while exploring the art of elongated  stitches.

While Hilary reads us a tale of murder, you’ll be asked to play detective… the solution to the mystery lies in the choices you make as you pick which stitch pattern to knit next!

Will you knit your way to the right answer?  Or will you be misled by the red herrings and misdirections?  We guarantee there’ll be no scares, just a lot of laughing and knitting!

Thursday:  Welcome Cocktail Party & Dinner.  After dinner, we’ll gather as Hilary reads the opening of the cozy mystery while we cast on and knit the first few rows of the cowl.

Friday:  in the morning class, Hilary will demonstrate how elongated stitches can completely transform a knitting pattern into a work of art that looks complicated (but isn’t) as we work the border section of our cowl.  Then it’s back to the mystery, where you’ll be asked a specific question based on the clues that have just been uncovered. Your answer will determine which elongated stitch pattern you knit next. We’ll break for lunch, then visit the local yarn shop, and poke around the artisan stores in town.  We’ll meet back at the Inn to hear the second part of the mystery story, then go to dinner, where you’ll have time to mull over the mystery, and consult with your fellow detectives.  After dinner, we’ll grab our needles to knit the answer you’ve chosen.

Saturday: back in class, we’ll learn another technique for elongating stitches. As Hilary reads deeper into the story and more clues are uncovered, we’ll resume  knitting our way towards solving the case.  After enjoying lunch, get back to our detective work, with a reading of the final clues and the last question you’ll need to answer to determine who the culprit is.  Have dinner at any of the delicious restaurants nearby, and discuss the case amongst your fellow detectives.

We’re chatting with a local guide about a ghost tour of the town, and we’ll have more information for you closer to the retreat date.

Sunday:  catch up on your knitting around the beautiful Inn, before we enjoy a special Southern Sunday Brunch, after which we have a guest lecturer coming to show us a multitude of ways to wear the shawls we love to knit (but don’t always know how to wear).  After the lecture, Hilary will conclude the tale of murder, and we can all finish knitting the final edge of our cowls together.  We’ll enjoy a Farewell Dinner together, during which time, we can chat and see who got closest to figuring out who dunnit!

Yarn Shopping and Swag

On Friday after lunch, we’ll visit Hillsborough Yarn Shop, a small but beautifully curated shop.

We’ll have yarn winders available so that you can wind your new yarn and knit ASAP.

Each reservation includes a Luxury Swag Bag, filled with special items selected by Criminal Knits and Wild Onion.

We plan to have a few dyers offering special kits for this pattern, and you’ll get first dibs on ordering!  Of course, closer to the retreat date, you will receive more information about what you’ll want to bring with you, and yarn requirements if you prefer to stash dive!

Ample Knitting Time

Of course, we’ve made plenty of time for knitting!

Enjoy the classes, then grab your knitting bag and head to the pub, or outdoor balconies with some of your new friends. At night after dinner, we’ll host informal knitting and chatting in the pub.

Transportation Details

The closest airport to Hillsborough is Raleigh-Durham International (RDU), located 27 miles away.  From there, you can rent a car, or take a ride share for approximately $35.  We’ll chat together closer to departure, so you will have a chance to coordinate your arrivals with others, and share the ride to the Inn.
